Date: Thursday 07-05-2026
Class schedule: 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Location: Online

Next Thursday, May 7 at 3:00 PM (15h), in an online format, we invite you to join this new session of our Open Talent lecture series, organized in collaboration with the Office of Displaced Designers (ODD). This session proposes an urgent and necessary reflection on the role of design and the ways of intervening in space in contexts of prolonged crisis, taking the context of Gaza as a case study.

Through an interdisciplinary conversation, topics such as heritage preservation at risk, oral archives, and virtual reality as a tool for memory will be addressed, among other strategies linked to the territory as a form of continuity and belonging. Three complementary perspectives that allow us to rethink the role of design in post-crisis contexts from a broad and critical perspective.

This Open Talent session will be held in English.

Speakers:

  • Karim Yahia. Founder of VirtuaLand, he specializes in 3D digitization, open access, and cultural heritage narratives. His mission is to document, analyze, and digitally preserve architectural heritage, with special attention to endangered sites. Through his work, he preserves multilayered heritage for future generations and provides an H-BIM platform for academic research and public exploration.
  • Alia Okasha. Architect and PhD from Cairo University, with over 25 years of experience. A lecturer and researcher in post-war architecture, she is the author of the award-winning book Architecture of Resistance. She collaborates with Al-Rowat for Studies and Research, focusing on oral history and the collective memory of displaced Palestinians in Egypt.
  • Cristina Tannous. Palestinian landscape architect from Haifa. Her practice lies at the intersection of political landscapes and socio-spatial justice. She focuses on displacement and the use of design as an informal tool to support marginalized communities, exploring strategies that heal, empower, and foster resilience in conflict-affected environments.
Moderated by: Carmen Mendoza and Kathrin Golda-Pongratz, architects, PhDs in Urbanism, and academic co-directors of the Master’s in Post-Crisis Design at UPC School.
